Polished floors and cleaning
Polishing is primarily an aesthetic choice since polished floors look quite stylish due to their gloss and shine. The buffing process in combination with polishing helps to increase the shine even further. However, the look of the floor is not the only factor to consider when deciding if to have a polished wooden floor or if another type of floor covering would be best. Personal preference plays the main role in deciding if the floor should be of polished wood or another material, of course, but maintenance and ease of cleaning is also quite important.
Polished floors are not the only choice as carpeting is also possible. However, polished floors are excellent in homes where there are people who suffer with allergies or asthma since these floors will trap much less dust. This is a powerful plus point for many people since a floor which only causes allergies to be worse will take away from the entire enjoyment of the house and make staying at home difficult. While this may seem like an exaggeration, for people with asthma, it is no joke and their home may contribute to bad health due to the carpeting. When it comes to avoiding problems with allergies, cleaning becomes key. This is due to the fact that dust build-up is a major problem point. Hence, a floor that is easy to clean becomes a bonus and in this case it is a polished floor that really is at the top of the list. Polished floors are able to be swept and mopped quite easily and regularly which means that dust will not build up. While very high-end carpets will be in possession of antibacterial coatings in the threading, this is not common and hence wooden floors are better for avoiding bacteria building up since all wooden floors are easy to clean. Carpets have to be vacuumed regularly and perhaps will have to be done daily. While it may be a matter of dispute, vacuuming is regularly thought to be more labour intensive than sweeping and so when this builds up as a day by day process this can become tiring. Even with everyday cleaning, carpets will need professional cleaning at least once a year which will not be necessary with wood floors. Furthermore, dirt shows up more on carpets than wood and is also more difficult to remove. This means the worn areas of the carpet will show up more regularly than the worn areas of a wooden floor. |

Spills are also another point to consider and pretty major when it comes to ease of cleaning. A spilled drink on carpet is going to be much harder to remove than on wood. Though they both require the spill to be dealt with at once so the liquid doesn’t get absorbed, the absorption in carpet is much quicker. While spot cleaner can be used in carpet stains that are small, there is the risk of discoloration to the carpet that would exceed the discoloration from the initial strain.
